How to prepare your car for rains this monsoon season
Monsoon is the most active rainy season in India and while it is best times to enjoy a drive, be sure to check your car is checked and is in a proper state to negotiate rain and wet road conditions.
Sending your car for a service is a fast and
efficient way of identifying and rectifying a majority of the above-mentioned
problems. A service will also be able to sort out any issues you may miss or
are unable to rectify yourself. While your car is getting serviced, you can
also get it professionally cleaned and polished, to better protect your car
from the elements.
All Vehicles require some level of attention to be ready for the rains, regardless of which part of the country you are in. With lockdown being eased most cars only now hitting the roads, the need to check the vehicles to keep them functioning smoothly through the course of monsoon months is very vital and important.
Here are some quick and easy tips to take care of your Vehicle during the rains:
Battery Checkup
Car Battery plays a pivotal role especially if your car is more than two years old. With most of the Car today being automatic and semi-automatic, battery plays a key role and wouldn’t be a great fun to be stuck in water with a poor battery which doesn’t allow you to start the car.
So make sure your batteries are checked before monsoon hits the shore .
The Wipers tend to be the most
important aspect during rains and is the most essential. After enduring the summer sun and dust, the
rubber on wipers tend to erode and cause streaks on the windshields when
deployed. In extreme cases, these streaks can greatly hamper visibility while
also not serving the purpose of wiping off rainwater.
A wiper doesn’t cost much and must be
replaced even if only slightly damaged. Also refill the washer compartment,
preferably with windshield water fluid.
Lights On!
Ensure that all lights - head lights,
tail lights, DRLs, emergency lights and fog lights - are properly functioning
and there is no crack in the outer casings in order to save it from water
seepage and short circuit
During torrential rains, visibility
drops and all of these lights play a crucial role in ensuring not just your
safety but safety of other motorists and pedestrians.
Tires for tough roads
If your vehicle has clocked certain
kilometers it’s time to replace your tire. Please refer to your manufacturer
manual for replacement details. Slippery conditions are known to make vehicles
with old tires lose traction which often causes accidents.
A thumb rule to check the condition of
existing tires is to check the treads. While at it, get the car looked at for
any possible need for wheel balancing and wheel alignment as well.
Stop and mean it
Brakes plays very pivotal role as far
as safety is concerned during the wet season. A simple test to check the
condition is to feel for any exceptional feedback from the brakes which could
signal a fault. Also, if the brakes are sliding in more than normal while applying
the usual pressure, this too could be a potential cause for concern and needs a
check.
Make sure you are always carrying an
inflated spare tire in the vehicle at all times. In case of tubeless tires, it
is also good to have an air-pressure filling machine in the car which can make
use of power from the car's power socket. It is also advisable to keep air
conditioning system in 'Fresh Air Intake' mode during rainy months while a
de-fogging liquid can be applied to all windows.
Paint and
body work
Another thing that doesn’t go well together is moisture and exposed metal, which almost always leads to rusting. While leaks in the rubber seals around the car can be a source of rust, another area of concern is places where the paint coat has been damaged. Exposed metal is more prone to rusting and it’s best to get these areas repaired at the earliest, as rusting can make the problem worse than it was.
You
should also keep the underside of your car clean and clear of the road grime
and dirt, as these can lead to chassis corrosion. A coat of polish after a wash
is highly recommended, as it not only makes your car look shiny and new but
also forms a protective layer on the body.
